Mr. Selfish and I have attempted to make pad thai on a few occasions. Each time, we failed miserably. I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the recipes we had used may have included ketchup. As a result, I knew that we would take a cooking class in Thailand and learn the proper way to make pad thai.

Since we had a week in Chiang Mai, we decided to take the cooking class there. Chiang Mai has so many cooking schools available that it is a bit daunting to choose a class. I ended up choosing Oriental Cuisine Thai Cooking School, because we had the option to make pad thai, as well as a curry paste.

We took a quick trip to the market to buy the ingredients and then headed to the chef’s home to start cooking. Our chef was knowledgeable and funny. She also took a shining to Mr. Selfish after he said that he liked spicy food. Of course, his food was crazy spicy by the end of the day.

Market Tour and Cooking Class in Hoi An

Mr. Selfish and I certainly enjoy taking cooking classes. Initially though, I wasn’t too sure whether I wanted to take a cooking class in Hoi An. However, after a few days of eating the food, I knew that we had to take one. The food in Hoi An is very different from the southern cuisine from Saigon.

We signed up for a cooking class with Van from Green Bamboo Cooking School, which is the highest rated cooking class on Trip Advisor. The class includes a market tour to buy ingredients and, more importantly, allows each of participant to choose from over sixty dishes to make.

Mr. Selfish and I had previously walked through the Hoi An market and were a little overwhelmed by the selection of produce and meat. It was nice to have Van take us around and show us the ropes. We started in the food stalls area where people were dining on their breakfast. Then, we went to the fruit and veggies area, where we sampled some fruit and Van pointed out the veggies we would need for our dishes.

Learning to Cook Traditional Balinese Food in Ubud

For our last day in Ubud, we decided to take a cooking class. We signed up for Payuk Bali Cooking Class, which is probably the best cooking class I’ve ever taken.

First, they drove us to a rice field and explained to us when and how rice is harvested. My cousin asked if she could walk in the rice fields for the photo op. Our guide promptly told us that she could but that there may be water snakes in the fields. Of course, she walked in the rice fields and immediately came upon a water snake. Below is the action shot of her running from it. I love hanging out with my little cousin; she’s always good for a laugh.
