Heading West: The Expensive Hotels around Yellowstone

Yellowstone is a tourist trap.

This is something I knew going in, but I was still shocked at how crowded and expensive it was. Mrs. Selfish is more of a glamping gal, then a car-camper, so I set out to find decent accommodations within range of Yellowstone.

While there are many hotels in Yellowstone itself, very few of them are actually bookable online.

Yellowstone is split up into 4 main entrances: North, East, South, and West. Having consulted a guide to Yellowstone’s main attractions, Mrs. Selfish and I decided to head through Yellowstone’s east entrance on Day 1, ending in the west entrance. For Day 2 we decided to head south to the Grand Teton National Park.

As a result I decided to book accommodations at two of the larger cities around Yellowstone: Cody, Wyoming and West Yellowstone, Montana.

A) Cody, WY. B) West Yellowstone, MT. C) Grand Teton National Park.

Rustic, but nice: The Cody

For our first night, I booked us at The Cody, in Cody, Wyoming. Unlike most places we passed through, Cody seemed to be a decent sized town with all the usual American stores. It’s a great place to stock up on supplies and sandwiches before hitting Yellowstone.

Heading West: Geysers and Hot Springs at Yellowstone

Mr. Selfish and I didn’t have any real expectations for the hot springs and geysers in Yellowstone. We had visited some areas with volcanic activity recently in New Zealand and weren’t too sure how they would be different. We were happy to discover that Yellowstone is quite different since it has the most geysers on earth.

Old Faithful: Awesomeness Every 90 Minutes

Mr. Selfish and I had heard about Old Faithful on numerous occasions and assumed that it would just be a lot of hype and a huge tourist trap. We were wrong. Old Faithful is worth all of the hype.

Geysers 01

Erupting almost every 91 minutes, Old Faithful is known as the most predictable geyser on earth. It erupts between 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of water at a height of 106 to 185 feet for approximately one to five minutes. It was quite impressive to watch. Mr. Selfish and I showed up just in time to catch an eruption.

Heading West: Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon

After a slow six days (36 hours) of driving, we finally reached Yellowstone. Yellowstone is a massive national park, in northwest Wyoming and parts of Idaho and Montana. It’s widely known as the first national park in the world. It’s massive and beautiful.

Around 2 million tourists visit Yellowstone every year, so be prepared for a fair share of lines and congestion. Knowing this going in, I was still a bit surprised as to how bad the roads can get. With only 1 lane in each direction, there’s a high amount of traffic if you travel during peak times. That being said, Yellowstone is worth it.

Especially Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon.

Heading West: There’s No Rushing Mt. Rushmore

I’ve always had a small fascination with giant statues carved into rock. Having seen our fair share of giant Buddhas in China and Japan, it seemed fitting to see the US equivalents at Mt. Rushmore. Mammoth presidents carved into the side of a mountain in the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore is equal parts cool, kitschy, and patriotic.

I was pretty excited to see them, and utterly crushed when we showed up that morning to see the mountain completely covered with fog.

Cue sad trumpet noises…

Fortunately that was about to change.

When planning our trip out West, we polled our friends and family to see if there was anywhere worth stopping on our way to Mt. Rushmore. A friend tipped us off to the Badlands, which we discovered was only a mere 20 minutes away from the highway.

Naturally we decided to tack them on to the drive, since 56 hours of driving is surely not enough.

Also, they look spectacular.

Mr. Selfish ended his post yesterday with the delightful eats we had in Chicago. Once we left Chicago, we were bored out of minds driving through Wisconsin and Minnesota. Luckily, when we hit South Dakota, it was fun spotting the kitschy billboards. I didn’t realize that South Dakota had so many hokey attractions. Here are the three attractions that lured us in with their billboards: Corn Palace, 1880 Town, and Wall Drug.

Heading West: Eating our way Across the Rust Belt

After leaving Virginia, Mrs. Selfish and I headed north through New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, heading west for South Dakota. While admittedly not the most direct route to San Francisco, it did take us through the Badlands and the Big Sky Country in the north.

Along the way we ate plenty of Subway and granola bar breakfasts, but we also met up with friends and family. Here’s some of the better meals we enjoyed on our way west.

Jersey-Style Cheese steaks: Gaetano’s

USA 003

The less popular cousin of the Philadelphia cheese steak, the Jersey-style cheese steak doesn’t get much love. This is unfortunate, since it is the objectively superior cheese steak – and doesn’t get much better than it does at Gaetano’s (224 Penny Packer Drive) in Willingboro, New Jersey.

The bread is fresh. The steak is tender, and best of all they use real cheese. It’s also quite a bargain at $14 for an 18” large – which is enough food for dinner for two!

While I normally order the plain cheese steak, this time Mrs. Selfish and I decided to splurge with the “Mr. Gee’s Cheese Steak”, which is a cheese steak with mushrooms, peppers, and pepperoni. Amazing.

USA 009

None of that cheese whiz crap here!

Heading West: A Long Stop in Virginia for Nostalgia

Before heading west on our cross-country tour of the States, Mr. Selfish and I stayed in Virginia for a couple of weeks primarily to see my family and friends in the area. Since we are both originally from Virginia, we didn’t do much there other than hang out. So, here are some of the food highlights from our long stop in Virginia.

The Green Leafe: The Best Happy Hour Special Ever!

Mr. Selfish and I met during undergrad at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg. Since the campus is only about half an hour away from my parents’ place, we visited a few times during our stay in Virginia. We stopped by the Green Leafe (765 Scotland St., Williamsburg, VA), which is a pub very close to campus.

Green LeafeBar

We discovered that the Green Leafe still has an outstanding selection of draught beer. We were also happy to learn that the Green Leafe currently has an amazing happy hour from 5-9pm, during which all draught beer are 50% off! You can’t beat a pint of good beer for $2.

Aroma’s: Roasting Marshmallows and Making S’Mores

Since we were already in Williamsburg, we decided to stop by Aroma Café (431 Prince George St., Williamsburg, VA) to make and eat some s’mores. They’re not the best in the world but it’s one of the few places in the area that you can roast marshmallows and make a s’more sandwich.

Not Just the Mouse: Eating Orlando

Mrs. Selfish and I lived in Orlando, Florida for 8 years before we left on our Selfish Year. We both moved there for work, and somewhat reluctantly stayed after getting a house. Orlando was in many ways a place we were forced to live, not a place we wanted to live.

That being said, 8 months later when we were drinking cocktails in Beijing with an awesome view of the Forbidden City, we actually found ourselves missing Orlando!

So we decided to go back.

Back to Epcot, to drink our way around the world. Back to Orlando, to visit friends. Back to Winter Park, to eat.

The Ravenous Pig: Gastropub Goodness

Orlando - Food 001

Located at 1234 N. Orange Ave. in Winter Park, the Ravenous Pig was probably the first good restaurant we ate at in the Orlando area. Opened in 2007, the Pig has won numerous awards, and was a semifinalist for the James Beard Awards in 2011 and 2012!

They have a great selection of wines and microbrews with a menu that changes weekly. Lunch typically runs from $10 – $18 for most orders, and dinner comes in at closer to $18 – $30.

Mrs. Selfish and I have probably eaten at the Ravenous Pig over a dozen times, and we’ve never had a disappointing meal. This time around I ordered their fried chicken sandwich, and Mrs. Selfish ordered the shrimp and grits.

The fried chicken sandwich was perfectly cooked: tender, crispy, slightly crunchy, yet still moist. The hot & sour sauce had a nice BBQ as well. The shrimp and grits were spicy, savory, and overall satisfying. I was glad we went back!

The Most Visited Theme Park in the World: Disney’s Magic Kingdom

In 2004, Mr. Selfish and I moved to Florida and purchased Disney annual passes. I started my law firm job right after Labor Day in September, and that week, the firm closed for a couple of days due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Ivan. Instead of preparing our apartment for the hurricane, we decided to go to Magic Kingdom. It was amazing because there was hardly anyone there. None of the rides had lines (other than Peter Pan, which always inexplicably has a line). We rode everything two or three times each. It was the best day at Magic Kingdom ever.

Mr. Selfish and I always talk about that one amazing hurricane day at Magic Kingdom, because every other time we’ve been, it is crazy crowded. Even though Magic Kingdom is usually packed, it is still a great park. It is what you think of when you think of Disney.

Going Wild at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Since we lived in Orlando for eight years, Mr. Selfish and I oftentimes had annual Disney passes. Not only do we love the Disney parks, but our friends and family who visited undoubtedly wanted to go to Disney.

Even though we’ve been to the Disney World parks dozens of times, I never took that many photos since I was always figured I would go back. With the exception of Epcot, which we re-visited during our selfish year, I don’t have that many photos of the other three Disney World parks. So here’s my disclaimer: these next three posts on Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Magic Kingdom will not have as many photos as my other Disney posts.

Although I don’t have the photos to do it justice, I feel that Animal Kingdom is the best designed Disney park. Not only does it never feel crowded (despite being the 7th most visited park in the world), the foliage and ambiance are on point.

Animal Kingdom 01

The center of the park is the Tree of Life, which is an artificial tree that is 145 feet tall and 50 feet wide.

We love walking around the Tree of Life. In particular, we enjoy seeing the two red parrots that are always screeching at one another in a loving way.

Yesterday, I went over how much me and Mr. Selfish love the World Showcase at Epcot. Even aside from the World Showcase, Epcot is a very enjoyable park.

International Flower and Garden Festival

We love all of the different festivals that occur at Epcot, such as the International Flower and Garden Festival. This annual festival usually occurs between March and May. It’s fun to see what Disney has dreamed up in plant form each year.

Drinking Around the World Showcase at Disney’s Epcot

Before our selfish year trip, Disney’s Epcot was definitely our favorite Disney park. Now, it’s a tossup between Epcot and DisneySea in Tokyo for me. I need to visit DisneySea a few times to make that decision considering that we’ve been to Epcot probably dozens of times.

When we visited Orlando recently, we decided to stop by Epcot for old time’s sake. We love Epcot mostly due to the World Showcase, which is a permanent world’s fair containing 11 pavilions each representing a different country. The pavilions are all around a man-made lake that has a perimeter of 1.2 miles.
